Mistral v.2 drill kit – main features and implant installation

To install implants with the Mistral drill kit, the surgeon can drill the specified diameter to the specified depth with exceptional accuracy. In this case, the drills step change protocol is considerably reduced in comparison with other Guide kits. These advantages have become possible thanks to innovative solutions adopted in the development of the Mistral drill kit. In addition, this concept assumes the versatility and the ability to work with implant systems of different manufacturers. The main features of the system are:

  1. PEEK elongated sleeves (6 mm) are used for drilling. It became possible to reduce free play while drilling significantly in comparison with titanium sleeves. It has happened by minimizing the technological gap between the guide cylinder of the drill and the inner surface of the sleeve. Also, drilling can be done without additional guide sleeves, using the template body to guide the drill. However the risk of contamination of the implant well with composite chips is increased in this case.
  2. The cortical drill for the initial drilling has an aggressive triangular shape for the drilling of the cortical bone without displacement from the axis of preparation. Additional cutting edges can simultaneously cut off the sharp edge of the alveolar crest. This reduces the axial deflection when using the main drills. An important feature is the 3 mm diameter of the cutting part of the cortical drill. This is is 0.1 mm larger than the diameter of the apical part of the main drills.
  3. The main drills (diameter 2.2, 2.7, 3.2 and 7 mm) have a stepped shape with the same diameter (2.2 mm) of the apical cutting part and an elongated (10 mm) guide cylinder. Thus, at the beginning of preparation with the main drill, its axial support is realized not only by the sleeve, but also by a hole previously designed by the cortical drill. Into this hole the apical part of the main drill is precisely included. In this case, the subsequent deepening of drilling leads to immersion of the guide cylinder of the drill into the sleeve and, accordingly, to its centering.
  4. The compactness of the Mistral drill kit is combined with the minimum discreteness of drilling depth planning of 1 mm. This discreteness allows you to plan the position of the sleeve as close as possible to the alveolar crest and is achieved by using additional spacer rings 1 and 2 mm.

The presence of the lateral cutout of the sleeve allows to simplify the use of the kit in the distal sections with difficulties in mouth opening.

For narrow inter-proximal areas, where there is not enough space to place the sleeves (often the area of the lower incisors), it is possible to form a guide hole directly in the body of the guide without using sleeves.

For final preparation, especially when working with a hard bone, we recommend to use drills and protocols offered by the implant manufacturer. In this case, the formation of the implant bed with the final drills, taps, condensers, etc. can be performed either with the removed surgical guide or with its use. This allows to achieve a smaller deviation from the planned axis. With a large diameter of the tool used, it is possible to remove the sleeve from the guide, thus increasing the diameter of the guide hole.

Easy and quick removal of the sleeve from the guide also provides the ability to install the implant through a guide providing control the immersion depth and the index of its rotation. This solution increases the accuracy of the implants installation (especially relevant for bone D3 and D4), provides control of the immersion depth for transgingival implantation, and additional rotation index control allows the production of individual prosthetic parts before the operation.

All drills included in the Mistral drill kit are displayed in the corresponding Implastation library. This allows you to make their virtual selection in a convenient graphical interface quickly. And to display the results of planning in an automatically generated operating protocol.
